each night, when I go to sleep, I die
the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn

Hello, my name is Huig; Huig Willemsz of course. I was the first resident here after the looting of Marshal Maarten van Rossum on March 6, 1528. I had more than three hectares of land then, from the church to the Trekvliet. Times were tough. In 1568 the Eighty Years' War broke out, culminating in the Siege of Leiden in October 1573. The Spaniards turned my yard into a war zone and burned many of my possessions. The tax inspector valued my property and house at only 3 guilders, 14 stuivers and 3 pennies. Luckily I survived and was able to maintain the house. How could I have imagined that this house would still exist today? And that so many people, like you, would enjoy this.

Genesis has had 46 owners in approximately 468 years to date. Lonneke Heemskerk and Marc Hoogvliet have been maintaining the heritage since 15 June 2012. They named my house Genesis. Out of respect, and with my approval.
