Silver factory (former)

In 1858, the Royal Dutch Factory for gold and silver works established J.M. van Kempen & sons located in Voorschoten.

The company, founded in 1789 by Johannes Mattheus van Kempen, wanted to expand, but had insufficient options in its location in Utrecht. Voorschoten was a logical choice, they were close to the sales market. After various management changes, mergers and partnerships, the company in Voorschoten was called: Koninklijke Van Kempen en Begeer.
The company made high-quality silverware such as crockery, cutlery, art objects and had an important regional function as an employer. Reason enough for Museum Voorschoten to include its history as one of its focus areas. In 1985 the company left the monumental building in Voorschoten. Van Kempen en Begeer was moved to Zoetermeer in a slimmed-down form.
