Voorschotens Kamerkoor zingt Elgar

17-11-2024 17-11-2024

The Voorschotens Chamber Choir will sing an anthology of choral works by Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934), including the Credo and Bavarian Highlands, on November 17, 2024, at 3 p.m. in the Federal Building.

Voorschotens Kamerkoor (VKK) will sing a program by English composer Edward Elgar on Nov. 17, 2024 at 3 p.m. in the Federal Building, conducted by conductor Nico Hovius and with piano accompaniment by Frank den Herder.
The program is an anthology of the choral music of Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934). Between two larger works, the Credo and Bavarian Highlands, the chamber choir sings shorter choral works, both spiritual and secular, from Christmas Carol to a tribute to Queen Victoria.

Elgar composed the Credo in 1872 (he was 15 at the time) but rewrote it five years later in 1877. At that time, the young Elgar was deeply connected to the English church music tradition, and in this work we are introduced to his talent for composing for choir. Through the rich harmonies and melodies that bring to life the emotion of the text, we hear Elgar's deep faith commitment.

He composed “Bavarian Highlands” in 1895, inspired by the vacation he and his wife Alice, spent in Bavaria. This collection of six songs for choir and piano, later arranged for orchestra, reflects the cheerful and carefree atmosphere of their travels through the picturesque countryside. Alice wrote the poems based on their experiences in the German Alps. The music is characterized by lightness and joy. Elgar knows how to flawlessly translate the atmosphere of each poem into music.
