AJ Plug Live acoustic
AJ Plug is an absolute hit in the Dutch blues scene. Singer AJ (Alexandra Jolanda) is therefore regarded as one of the greatest blues rock ladies in our country. In September 2019, AJ was already booked to perform in Voorschoten. A few months prior to her performance in Voorschoten, she was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Her world turned upside down. Uncertain years dawned. But combative as she is, she overcame her illness. By the end of 2021, AJ was back, and how! Read her account below.
Blues ambassador Johan Derksen called her ‘a natural talent’ and took her on his theatre tours. After releasing her debut album ‘Let Go Or Be Dragged’ (2014), her career took off like a rocket. October 2016, she released her second album ‘Chew Chew Chew’. The singer's career landed on a fast track and the tough blonde's second album also garnered purely jubilant reviews. Thus, Music Maker wrote: ‘She has written all twelve songs on the album herself and they are all top-notch. Sometimes it rocks, other times you hear a tear-jerking ballad. Just a top record!’ (5 stars).
May 2018, she and partner/guitarist Klaas Kuijt found themselves in an old dilapidated farmhouse in Grolloo.
With minimal equipment but with plenty of atmosphere, the acoustic album ‘Barefoot The Grolloo Takes’ was recorded and released there.
On this album, you get sucked into her sensitive songs.A fantastic album, without fuss, pure and honest.
In mid-2019, fate struck: oesophageal cancer nearly took her life. After fighting it for a year and a half, she started writing again and the album ‘Killer King’ was released in late 2021.That her album is about being sick and getting better is only natural. The song titles speak volumes:The Shape I'm In, The Sky Turned Black, Tears Ran Dry, Never Gonna Stop, It Will Be Alright, Gimme A Smile. 'Writing is processing.Every song is really about something.Hopefully they offer recognition and comfort.'In March 2022, the album Killer King won an award -Best Album- presented by the Dutch Blues Foundation. She toured all over the country with this album, followed by a ‘Killer King’ Theatre show, which ended in early 2024.
In spring 2024, she started writing her new album ‘Underneath your skin’, which ‘in her own words’ stems from her previous album Killer King. That cancer doesn't just disappear from your life even if you've survived it, but does make strides forward is evident in the first single ‘Part of me’.A surprisingly new ‘sound’ with once again rave reviews!
